All you need is...

Too many of us as pastors have measured our ministries by what we are against. We take these hard stances against this signaled out sin or that perceived sin.

However, as I read the Gospels, I hear Jesus saying: "The biggest sin you can commit is to neglect love!"

Secondly, too many of us measure success by our expositional or creative or leadership genius, when Paul says if we all of that, and have not love, we have nothing. Zip!

I truly believe pastors need to lead the church back to the way of love.

I truly believe God's Word can be summed up in one word: Love.

Jesus said if we get that right, everything else will take care of itself.

Why do we have to complicate it?

Take it back...

We live in the most highly educated society and the most highly participatory culture in the history of humankind. Everything around us has changed: the clothes we wear, the way we transport ourselves, how we communicate.

And yet, 99% of preachers stand up on Sunday morning and deliver a monologue. A soliloquy.

And their churches decline...

And they wring their hands....

There is another way...

There is a way of participation and inclusion and dialogue and conversation!

Grace & Truth

There are those who struggle with the pure, undiluted grace of God, so they take the concept of balance and try to apply it here. They can't very well deny the grace of God  --  it's too evident in Scripture. But they'll try to tone it down with this argument:

"Well, yes," they say. "Grace is a wonderful truth. But you have to keep grace and truth in balance with each other so you don't go to an extreme."

Since few people want to be "extreme," that seems to make reasonable sense.... This approach is problematic because it draws a line down the middle and puts grace on one side and truth on the other, as if the two are in opposition to each other. It's as if they're saying that grace is not truth and truth is not grace. That's not what the Bible says.... If you're going to draw a line, draw it between grace and legalism, not between grace and truth. Just a thought...

Family

Think on this...

Parents,  remember in 2012 that nothing in the world highlights and underscores the transcendent values of God like the church. Sports don’t do it. Education doesn’t do it. Movies and media don’t do it. Only the local church does. And I can’t emphasize enough the importance and priority the local church should play in the life of your family...

Because when you run to HIS HOUSE, you’ll discover how to run YOUR HOUSE...

Real

One of the greatest challenges for me as a pastor is to not succumb to the constant pressure of expectation. Members have fantasies of what their pastor should be. Church organizations, denominations or movements have fantasies of what its pastors should be. But worst of all, pastors themselves have fantasies of what they should be or would like to be.

I make it my personal challenge to be exactly who I am: myself. I also encourage others to be exactly who they are.

It is as the persons they are that preachers are called to this task, as these specific people with their own characteristics and histories. It is as the persons they are that they have been selected and called. This is what is meant by originality. Pastors are not to adopt a role. They are not to slip into the clothing of biblical characters. That would be the worst kind of comedy. They are not to be Luthers, churchmen, prophets, visionaries, or the like. They are simply to be themselves, and to expound the text as such. Preaching is the responsible word of a person of our own time. Having heard myself, I am called upon to pass on what I have heard. Even as ministers, it matters that these persons be what they are. They must not put on a character or a robe. They do not have to play a role. It is you who have been commissioned, you, just as you are, not as minister, as pastor or theologian, not under any concealment or cover, but you yourself have simply to discharge this commission. I encourage pastors everywhere to find the courage to live up to this arduous but simple task. I realize and personally know the cost of taking such a risk. You might risk losing support, popularity, your church and even your job. But would you rather lose that or yourself? After nearly twenty years in ministry, it's still a challenge at times not to play the fantasy game and try to satisfy people's expectations, assumptions, demands, etc. Reality is the best policy...
